Isaiah 43:18-19 - Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
As we wrap up this first week of Advent, focusing on how the story of Christ’s coming was for all people, at all times, and for each of us, on this divine day, I want to point us to the glorious crossroads we find ourselves in between past, present, and future.
We are aware of our pasts, we carry them with us, our scars and histories and memories and lessons learned. At times we are weighed down by the things we cannot let go. At times we are propelled forward to something new, something better ahead. And yet all we are given is today. All we are promised is right now.
As we enter into the weekend, leading us to the second week of Advent, let’s allow the story of Jesus to point us not to the former things but to the new thing God is doing. Hope is all around us. Grace can be found at every turn. The presence of God is upon us even when our hearts struggle to believe it.
Christ has come and indeed He will come again. Do you not perceive it?
“Everything past is thrust back from the future and everything future follows upon the past, and everything past and future is created and set in motion by the One who is always present.” Augustine, Confessions
How do you see the Lord doing “a new thing” in this season? Do you find yourself more often stuck in the past or too focused on the future?
